Joshua Greinstein (referred to as Josh) developed the Marine First Responders and their Junior Lifeguard Programs after seeing the need for open water safety training and services in his community. Over the course of his career, he realized that not all individuals possess the basic knowledge about the marine environment and the potential dangers that are ever present in and around the water.
A graduate of Indian River State College’s Fire Academy, Josh also has a degree in Emergency Medical Services and is a state-certified paramedic. His skill set has been refined with 14 years of service in Fire Rescue, working as a flight medic, and in a high volume emergency room.
Josh’s professional marine experience started with Martin County Ocean Rescue and Palm Beach County’s North District. He also has several years’ experience as a lifeguard at private beach clubs and private communities. His skills have become second nature and he believes that ongoing training and education is what is necessary to successfully deal with high stress rescue situations.
Other aspects of Josh’s training includes; advanced level rescue swimmer with Ocean Rescue Systems in Portland, Maine, advanced PADI SCUBA certification and intermediate freediving level with Performance Freediving International.
Josh’s passion for the ocean was apparent to his parents early on; after he graduated high school they sent him to Costa Rica. It was there that he learned of the dangers of rip currents and unguarded beaches. During an afternoon look at the ocean, Joshua witnessed the tragic scene of two drowning victims, lying on the beach beneath white sheets. Upon his return home, he immediately enrolled in the American Red Cross lifeguarding certification class, where he learned that superior lifeguarding should be focused on prevention. When necessary, lifeguards perform the most heroic rescues as first responders.
